Literacy & English

At Carron Primary School and ELC the development of literacy skills plays an important role in all learning.

Our whole-school approach to teaching literacy focuses on developing reading, writing, listening, and talking skills. The programme uses a range of interactive and engaging strategies to help children become confident and independent learners. Key components include reciprocal teaching, phonics, spelling strategies, and shared reading and writing, all of which are designed to improve comprehension and literacy skills.

Children and young people develop and extend their literacy skills when they have opportunities to:

  • communicate, collaborate and build relationships.
  • reflect on and explain their literacy and thinking skills, using feedback to help them improve and sensitively provide useful feedback for others.
  • engage with and create a wide range of texts.
  • develop their understanding of what is special, vibrant and valuable about their own and other cultures and their languages in different media, taking advantage of the opportunities offered by ICT.
  • explore the richness and diversity of language.
  • extend and enrich their vocabulary through listening, talking, watching and reading. , how it can affect them, and the wide range of ways in which themselves and others can be creative.

Literacy: Experiences and Outcomes (Education Scotland)

We Are A Reading School!

In 2017, we embarked on a journey to create a reading culture within our school. This is something we had  huge success in, with a love of reading becoming visible in pupils across the whole school. We were even invited along to the First Ministers Reading Challenge event in May 2018 to showcase our fantastic work.  Since then, we have continued to build on our reading culture, and in December 2020 we were delighted to be awarded a Reading School: Gold Accreditation. We were then re-accreditated with our Gold Reading School award in September 2024.

We continue our reading journey at Carron, supported by our wonderful team of pupil Reader Leaders, who motivate and inspire our pupils to develop a love for reading.

1 + 2 Languages

Learning a new language encourages children and young people to broaden their horizons as they explore the language and its associated culture. At Carron Primary School and ELC we teach Spanish, Gaelic and Mandarin (via our Confucious Hub) in addition to English. Through their learning of a new language:

  • children gain a deeper understanding of their first language and appreciate the richness and interconnected nature of languages
  • children enhance their understanding and enjoyment of other cultures and of their own and gain insights into other ways of thinking and other views of the world
  • children develop skills that they can use and enjoy in work and leisure throughout their life.

The study of language plays an important role in all language learning and the development of literacy skills.
